Lab Culture

In the Kulkarni lab, we view our scientific quest as a big giant jigsaw puzzle, where everyone works together to put the missing pieces together. Our goal is to address complex biological questions, with the hope of gaining clarity on some of the key questions that are central to the healthcare. We approach these questions by drawing on our strengths in cellular immunology, microbiology, stem cell and epithelial cell biology; and collaborating with experts to bring different expertise together. We believe that groups with varied perspective and strong commitment make new discoveries and make science fun. Communication, collaboration, and cooperation are crucial for our team to flourish and for each individual to grow as a scientist and person.

Values

In the Kulkarni lab, we aim to promote and foster a supportive environment. We believe in celebrating everyone’s achievements, building a strong community, prioritizing a healthy balance and supporting a growth mindset. These are our values:

  1. A supportive learning community
  2. Community and belonging
  3. Growth mindset
  4. Health and well being
  5. Curiosity

Mentoring in the Lab

My goal is to provide trainees with an opportunity to bring out the best in them, and I believe this can be achieved through both scientific and personal fulfilment. Every lab member establishes an individual development plan (IDP), with explicit short- and long-term career goals. I meet with each lab member and review the IDP on a yearly basis to ensure that the plans are being met, mutually agreeable targets are being set and alternative strategies are in place if required. Trainees are also encouraged to provide their feedback about my communication, mentorship and any changes they wish to bring.
